Panicky. Almost Hysterical.

I recently came across a brilliant excerpt while watching this video of a lecture by Michael Wesch, which I highly recommend you all watch. What is striking about the quote below is not only that it is about urbanization but that was written in 1926.

How painfully relevant it remains today.

What we are encountering is a panicky, almost hysterical, attempt to escape from the deadly anonymity of the modern world…and the prime cause is not vanity…but the craving of people who feel their personality sinking lower and lower into the whirl of indistinguishable atoms to be lost in a mass civilization. – Henry Seidal Canby, 1926
